Favorite Uncle. Isn't that the title that we all aspire too? It's an extremely difficult task. Just when you think you've got the election in the bag, some other uncle comes along who's better at tossing children to and fro, letting them climb on him, or many other important skills.
The work of uncling is never done. (I totally verbified a noun, deal with it.) That's why I decided to get an early start. Two days ago, William became my newest nephew. (From what I hear, his journey to get here was not an easy one. But that is a story reserved for his parents to tell.) He and I are already totally buddies.

He is dreaming about what an awesome uncle I am |
The above picture was taken right after I taught him how to play chess, and we had a heated debate about whether Star Wars or Star Trek is better. My main argument: "Death Star. Enough Said." His main argument: "Star Trek was playing during my mother's labor."
What can I say? He's a good debater. I'm looking forward to lots of good uncling in the future.
You make an awesome uncle and this time you don't have to compete with Graham.
ReplyDeleteI was explaining that to Graham when I was at the hospital. He is a tough one to beat.
DeleteYou are the best in my opinion. Though I think you might be sad you taught him chess so early because he might beat you sooner.
ReplyDeleteBeing undisputed favorite uncle on Delta's side of the family, the more like a child you are the more children are likely to like as they like a child, or another way to look at it what child likes any adult as much as any one of their child friends. Along with that it doesn't hurt to show off your toys, IE sports car's, big TV's, rubix cubes, just to name a few.
ReplyDeleteUm it was weird, the Unknown is me... Zack
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's like one of those movies where your identity has been erased. Not even the internet has heard of you.
DeleteWilliam just said his first complete sentence. After reading your blog post, he declared "I confirm that Jeffery Stockett is my favorite uncle." Congrats!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad he confirmed it! Your son is wise far beyond his years!
Delete"Meg" was actually Graham
ReplyDeleteBeing the favorite uncle can be a tough gig and takes a lot of energy. Best of luck in all your future uncling.
ReplyDeleteMy fiance is already working on obtaining "favorite uncle" status among my nieces/nephews and has a good start. He may achieve it once he actually becomes their uncle. It is difficult to gain ground with nieces/nephews that live far away, but he doesn't waste any time when we are around them. He has exceptional kid-tossing skills, and since he's tall the kids really enjoy climbing him. I think he's got it in the bag. As I'm already favorite aunt on that side of the family, we'll be an indomitable aunt-uncle pairing.
ReplyDeleteI have to disagree. Being an AUNT is the best job.
